Au Naturale! An Adult Coloring Book
Published in 2017, Au Naturale! was my first published coloring book. I wanted to put my art degree to use but was afraid of putting my art out there for the world to see. Believe it or not I never really thought of myself as a great artist. Even after a degree, and plenty of encouragement from my friends and family, I still felt like an imposter. Finally I figured that I just had nothing left to lose. Either my family was right and I could draw or I was right and I couldn’t. Finding out I was wrong was the best thing that ever happened. This book is a compilation of the first 30 coloring pages that I sold on Etsy. The designs are inspired by the Afro Punk aesthetic and a love of natural hair. I just love how textured and unique Black hair is and I wanted to show that in the coloring book designs.
Edify: A Black History Coloring Book
Inspiration for this coloring book came from my love of history podcasts. There are so many things that they don’t go into detail about while you are in school, especially with black history. These pages highlight some of my favorite stories that I learned about through podcasts, books, and some of my own research. With a better focus on what to draw I was happy to work on this in the spring so I was happy to get this published in 2018. Researching our history also introduced me to Hoodoo, which now inspires much of my art today!
Black Magic: An Adult Coloring Book
Published in 2020, this coloring book features illustrations of witches steeped in African American lore. This is one of my favorite books to work on so far as it combines magical elements with the rich black history that I love so much. Working on this coloring book inspired me to work on other African tales and fables and maybe even come up with my own children’s book one day!
I Respect Difference!
Something's different about third-grade teacher Mrs. Brookings when she returns to school from summer break. Their parents have already been informed, but now Mrs. Brookings' students are about to discover the difference in their teacher, too.
"I Respect Difference" celebrates our differences and how they make us uniquely powerful. Getting an understanding breeds awareness, with celebration and advocacy tagging along for the ride. Jump between the pages with Mrs. Brookings' class to find what happens when they learn to love and respect DIFFERENCE.
The Day My Dad Turned Invisible
Seven-year-old Sean hopped off the bus after school one Friday afternoon to terrible news. After his first week of second grade his family had to tell him that his father passed away. The Day My Dad Turned Invisible follows Sean as he experiences death for the first time in his life as he tries to get a grasp of what it really means when someone passes away.
This true story by Sean R. Simmons shares his experience as a young child going through different emotions as he asks his family members questions to get an understanding of the events that went on after his father passed away. Ultimately Sean grasps the meaning of death and learns to deal with it the best he knows how.
Motherhood Moment to Wine About
Introducing the perfect book to help you survive the perils of motherhood. This book is a full-color, 64-page edition that contains a variety of pictures showing kids at their very worst; from coloring the walls to throwing tantrums in stores. Each scenario is followed by journal pages to help you record the moment because you know that your children will one day deny it ever happened. The book also contains pages to record how you relaxed to help you through the challenging times, pages to list what wines you may have paired with difficult behavior you encountered, and a place to note the redemption moments where your kids made you realize all the trouble was completely worth it.
Parenting Moments From Quarantine
Parenting Moments form Quarantine is another brain child of John Graham. He liked the work I did with Swing Swing so well, he requested me again for this hilarious book. Throughout the pages of this book you'll find places to record the very best and the very worst things your kids can do while trapped at home. This started out as a Mothers Day book, but with the outbreak of Covid-19, John was able to pivot very quickly. This book features 17 two-page spreads by me along with work pages to record your memories!
Mommy Drinks Wine Because of You
Let's be honest. Your kids will drive you to drink, and this book will prove that point. Enjoy this humorously illustrated book that is written in children's book style, but meant for the mothers out there. The catchy rhymes will make all the pain and suffering your kids put you through completely worth it. (Maybe not, but it should at least put a smile on your face.)
The Behavior Book
Take a trip through this 64-page edition and look at pictures of kids having bad behavior. After each picture is a chance to speak with your kids about why the situations might be happening and how the kids might have felt. Using this book in a calm, neutral setting will help families talk through behavioral situations they might encounter in everyday life. From tantrums to making messes, a wide variety of common ways kids act up are featured. After discussing some challenging situations with your kids, take a moment and look through the quality family moment pages also, where kids can fill out activities and situations that help them overcome the feelings that may cause them to act out. This book was created for all families with young children, but especially for kids that may have emotional control issues or be behaviorally challenged.
Swing, Swing, up so high!
Swing, Swing, up so high is a lovely book that illustrates a lullaby by John Graham Jr. The story features a culturally diverse cast of children as they spend the day on a play ground swinging on the swing set.
